Professional AC Installation

A new air conditioner is only as good as the day it goes in. At Flo-Rite Air Conditioning & Heating, AC installation is a measured job. We size the system to the house, help pull the right permit, set the equipment level and tight, recover refrigerant from the old unit, and test airflow and charge before we leave.

We offer estimates, equipment at more than one price point, and AC financing for homes and small businesses across Hillsborough and Polk Counties - and beyond. Flo-Rite is licensed, bonded, and insured (Florida license #CAC1819430). Class A certified technicians handle the work, and select systems include a 10-year parts and labor warranty when we sell and install the equipment.

If the outdoor unit is loud, the indoor coil is icing, or the system is more than a decade old, call (813) 796-8034 or request an instant quote.

Why Professional AC Installation Matters in West Central Florida

West Central Florida asks more of an air conditioner than a mild-climate suburb. Long cooling seasons, attic heat, and humidity mean a sloppy hookup shows up as short cycles, sticky rooms, and a compressor that works too hard.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program tells homeowners to treat installation as part of the purchase, not an afterthought. ENERGY STAR’s HVAC quality installation guidance is clear and states that providers should size the equipment to the actual house instead of a square-footage rule of thumb, set airflow to the manufacturer’s specifications, charge refrigerant correctly, and inspect the ducts. Oversized equipment can short-cycle, which cuts comfort and shortens equipment life. Weak airflow and a wrong charge raise bills and raise the chance of a callback.

That is the difference between hanging a box on the pad and a professional air conditioner installation. We design to the house, then install to the manufacturer and to Florida code.

Do You Need a New AC System?

Every system reaches a point where another repair is the expensive choice. Common signs we see on local calls:
  • The equipment is about 10 years old or older and repairs are stacking up.
  • Summer electric bills keep climbing with no change in how you use the house.
  • Rooms farthest from the air handler never catch up on humid afternoons.
  • The compressor short-cycles or the breaker trips on hot days.
  • You are on a first-generation R-22 system, or parts are getting hard to match.
We still check whether a repair or a maintenance visit can restore the unit. If it can, we say so. If it cannot, we walk you through HVAC replacements and new AC system options rather than pushing the largest unit on the truck.

How Is AC System Sizing Determined?

Florida does not treat sizing as a suggestion. The Florida Building Commission’s air-conditioning Q&A states that the code requires the air conditioner to match the size and conditions of the house: windows, insulation, orientation, and related loads. For a full replacement of the air handler and outdoor unit, the contractor or a licensed Florida engineer submits sizing calculations with the permit.

We do not pick tonnage off square footage alone. A load calculation following ACCA Manual J, the ANSI-recognized residential method also referenced by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center, looks at the house as it stands:
  • Conditioned square footage and ceiling heights
  • Wall, attic, and floor insulation
  • Window area, glass type, and which way those windows face
  • Shade from trees, porches, and neighboring roofs
  • Duct location and condition, especially attic runs
  • Occupancy, kitchen load, and how the family actually uses rooms
  • Local design temperatures and the humidity the coil has to pull out of the air
From that load, we select matched indoor and outdoor equipment and confirm the pair on an AHRI certificate. The Florida Building Code Q&A also requires matched systems when you replace a condenser or air handler as a functional unit, not as a minor repair.

Newer equipment must also meet current federal efficiency rules. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2023 central air conditioner standards set a Southeast regional minimum of 14.3 SEER2 for split-system air conditioners under 45,000 Btu/h installed on or after January 1, 2023. Higher-efficiency equipment is available when the load, ductwork, and budget support it. We will tell you when a higher SEER2 rating will actually pay off in this climate, and when the money is better spent on ducts or a better match.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does an AC Installation Take? A standard replacement is often finished in one day on site once the permit is issued and the equipment is on the truck. Assessment, ordering, and permitting add calendar days before that. Unusual electrical work, duct replacement, or a crane set can push the job past one day. We put the expected window in your estimate.

What Should I Do to Prepare My Home? Clear the path to the air handler and the outdoor unit, secure pets, and plan to be available for a short thermostat walkthrough. Share gate codes and any HOA pad rules before install day. You do not need to pack up the house.

How Much Does AC Installation Cost in This Area? Price follows tonnage, SEER2 rating, whether the indoor coil and air handler are replaced with the condenser, duct repairs, electrical work, and access. A two-sentence internet number will not match your house. We give a written estimate after the visit.

Do You Remove the Old Air Conditioner? Yes. Refrigerant is recovered to EPA Section 608 safe-disposal rules, and we haul the old indoor and outdoor equipment.

Is a Permit Required for AC Installation in Florida? Yes, a mechanical permit is required for a new system or a full changeout. We pull it. Unincorporated Hillsborough County applications run through HillsGovHub. Cities issue their own permits.

Can I Keep My Old Air Handler and Replace Only the Outside Unit? Sometimes, if the indoor coil, metering device, and refrigerant type match the new condenser and the pair can be documented as a matched system. The Florida Building Code Q&A on matched replacements still applies. Many older air handlers are the wrong coil or the wrong refrigerant. We will not pair parts that cannot be certified.

Do You Install Mini Splits on This Visit? We install mini splits, but that is a different scope. If your quote includes both a central changeout and a ductless zone, you will see both lines on the estimate.

What Warranty Comes with Professional AC Installation? Select systems bought and installed through Flo-Rite include a 10-year parts and labor warranty. Exact manufacturer coverage depends on the model and on registration. We review both before you sign.
